Water Apartheid in Gaza: The Time to Act is Now

Bringing Clean Water to the Children of Palestine

There is a growing water crisis in Palestine. In the Gaza Strip, poor sanitation and over-extraction have polluted the limited water supply. In September 2009, the Middle East Children's Alliance (MECA) launched the Maia Project to provide Palestinian children with clean, safe drinking water.

This project began when the Student Parliament at the UN Boys' School in Bureij Refugee Camp, Gaza were given the opportunity to choose ONE thing they most wanted for their school: THEY CHOSE TO HAVE CLEAN DRINKING WATER.

The large water purification unit costs $11,500 and each unit provides water for 1,500-2,000 children and staff. A small purification unit for a preschool or kindergarten costs $4,000 and serves 150-450 children.

Wake Up Call Nebraska! Number of Tax Dollars Nebraska Is Giving To Israel's Military- And What Else Nebraska Could Be Doing With It

  • From 2009 to 2018, the United States is scheduled to give Israel-- the largest recipient of U.S. assistance-- $30 Billion in Military Aid!
  • Through its illegal 44-year military occupation of the Palestinian West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip, ISRAEL misuses U.S. weapons in violation of U.S. law to kill and injure Palestinian civilians, destroy Palestinian civilian infrastructure, blockade the Gaza Strip, and build illegal settlements in West Bank and East Jerusalem.

I Feel This Is Very Important To Say

  • Neither I, nor the September 15th Rallies, support terrorism in any form.
  • All deaths and violations of humans' rights, equality, safety, justice, and peace are to be mourned.
  • We have a responsibility as fellow human beings and citizens of this world to hold accountable those who cause and support the innocent loss of lives and destruction that are currently happening
in places like Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank.

Where I Went and Who I Met with throughout Israel, Palestine, and the West Bank

This is a Map of the West Bank Wall.  The Red Line is where the wall has been built and the Green Line is the border between Palestine and Israel.  Notice how the Red Line (the wall) in many places is no where near the Green Line (the border).

Here are some of the areas I traveled to and organizations and people I met with during my Interfaith Peace Builders Delegation to Israel, Palestine, and the West Bank.

Here is a Sample of the Courageous Wisdom and Insight of the Palestinian People

10-year old boy in Bil'in, Palestine

I dare you to look into the eyes of a mother I met in Bil’in and not feel something shift deep inside your core.  Her name is Suhaer Khateib, a Palestinian woman whose indescribable raw wisdom, honesty, and intensity were beyond all languages, beyond all words.   Although we did not speak the same language, it was the pain and courage in her eyes that rocked every moral fiber in my being as she told me her story.

Suhaer grew up in the village of Bil’in, a Palestinian farming village that is on the front lines of resisting the occupation through non-violent resistance.  Bil’in sits amongst the mountains and the olive trees that have supported the families there for hundreds of years.  The occupation is visible in every corner of the village.  The remains of burnt olive trees cover the surrounding hills while the wall, the same wall that snakes through Israel and Palestine, separating farmers from their land, children from their schools, Palestinians from their roads…and Muslims from Jews, slices through the village’s land.

News and Reflections of My Delegation to Israel and Palestine

    Katie Huerter in Bethlehem, Palestine
Thank you to all of my readers for your patience while I update my blog.  My experience in Israel and Palestine was extremely intense and thought-provoking... which is causing me to take my time explaining the reality I witnessed.

I will soon be posting day-by-day summaries and reflections of my 10 day delegation, in addition to current statistics, facts, and news relevant to the Israeli/Palestinian Conflict.

Thank you again for all of your support as you follow me on my journey towards justice and peace!

Budrus: Amazing Documentary of the Palestinian/Israeli Conflict and the Power of Nonviolent Resistance

I'm diligently working on organizing a screening of the film Budrus in Omaha.
An inspiring documentary that brings tremendous hope to the Palestinian/Israeli conflict and proves that everyday individuals can make a difference and bring about change.  This call to action has now sparked the nonviolent resistance movement sweeping across Palestine.

Please watch and spread the word!

I'm Traveling to the Middle East and I Need Your Help!

“Be the change that you wish to see in the world.”- Mohandas Gandhi
As many of you know, I will soon be graduating with my bachelors in Philosophy and Non-Profit Administration.  My studies and research within the field of philosophy have focused on issues of injustice, conflict-resolution, and peace around the world, especially within the Middle East.  Advocating for peace and human rights is not simply a hobby of mine; it is my passion in life.  Next month, I will be traveling to the Middle East to witness and experience first-hand the injustice I have studied and continue to advocate against. I invite you to join me, to help make this happen.
